Ecological Landscape Architecture for a Woodland Community

Set against a lush, rural backdrop, this residential project required a highly sensitive landscape design approach that seamlessly integrates modern living with rich ecological restoration and dynamic planting strategies.

Project Overview

The Sawmills development prioritises a deep connection to nature and robust community engagement. Our landscape architects carefully crafted a master plan that transitions smoothly from beautifully landscaped terrace housing to a private community woodland. By weaving together functional green infrastructure with natural play spaces, the scheme delivers a resilient, visually captivating environment that respects Dartington’s local character.

Our Approach

Our landscape management and design strategy focused on sustainability, biodiversity, and community wellbeing:

  • Rain Gardens & SuDS: Implemented sustainable urban drainage systems featuring bio-retention rain gardens. The specialised rain garden planting not only manages surface water runoff but also serves as a crucial element for climate change adaptation.
  • Community Woodland & Play Spaces: Designed a private community woodland featuring accessible recreational routes and natural play spaces. These areas foster community engagement and provide safe, exploratory environments for children.
  • Hedgebanks & Boundaries: Constructed traditional Devon hedgebanks and stone-faced planting beds to define boundaries organically, reflecting local heritage while establishing vital wildlife corridors.
  • Planting Design: Utilised dynamic planting schemes filled with pest and disease resilient species to ensure the long-term vitality of the streetscape and private gardens.
